Live plant data from Modbus controllers into Grafana for a geothermal company
Telegraf reads cogeneration units, heat pumps and meters over Modbus at three sites. Energy monitors and market prices sit beside them in Grafana.
Client and industry
Noven
Geothermal energy-as-a-service, Belgium
The problem
The client runs heating and power plants in buildings it does not own. To bill fairly and catch faults early, it needed live readings from the plant controllers and meters at each site, next to the energy prices that decide how the plant should run.
What we did
- Plant data over Modbus. Telegraf polls cogeneration units, heat pumps and heat distribution at three sites: power, temperatures, pressures, flows, run hours and error counts.
- Energy and price feeds. Python collectors pull readings from energy monitors and solar installations, plus day-ahead electricity prices and monthly gas prices.
- One view per building. Everything lands in InfluxDB and shows in Grafana: a building dashboard with cogeneration efficiency, calories delivered and grid import and export, and a solar dashboard.
- Alerts. Grafana alerts fire on cogeneration alarms and water leaks.
- Easy to extend. The stack runs in Docker Compose, so a new site is one more Telegraf service and one config file.
Stack used
Telegraf, InfluxDB, Grafana, Modbus, Python and Docker.
Duration
8 months
Outcome
Built the InfluxDB and Telegraf ingestion layer plus Grafana dashboards and alerts, giving the client live visibility into building energy production and market prices so they can run the plants more efficiently and cut costs
