SLA reporting and a managed Grafana migration for a building operations company
We turned incident records and monitoring data into monthly and quarterly SLA reports, and moved Grafana dashboards to Amazon Managed Grafana.
Client and industry
Genea
Cloud building operations, United States
The problem
The client promises uptime to the buildings that use its access control and operations software. Incidents were tracked in a work-management tool and metrics lived in Datadog, so working out the SLA each month meant manual spreadsheet work.
What we did
- Incident data in one place. A Python job loads incident records, with type, start and resolution times, into PostgreSQL.
- SLA calculation. The job computes monthly and quarterly availability. A major outage counts in full and a partial outage counts at 30 percent, as agreed with the business.
- Monitoring data. A collector pulls the metrics behind the SLA from the Datadog API for the same report.
- Managed Grafana. We moved data sources, dashboards, folders and alert rules to Amazon Managed Grafana, so the team no longer runs its own Grafana server.
Stack used
Grafana, Amazon Managed Grafana, PostgreSQL, Datadog and Python.
Duration
6 months
Outcome
Delivered Grafana dashboards that give the company clearer visibility into key business metrics and operations
